Total Braces Cost For Children

One of the most unpleasant things a parent can hear is that his or her child needs braces. Not only they are complicated and the kid will have much harder time in school because of them, but they also cost fortune. An average kid’s braces can cost anything between 2 and 5 thousand dollars, and that is for the simplest cases.

Should your child need some work done before actually installing braces, you better have a good dental insurance, as a friend of mine recently paid 9 thousand dollars for braces for her daughter. Yes, you heard it correctly, several pieces of metal and few wires cost her as much as a good used car. The kid had to have three teeth removed, to eliminate crowding, plus some expensive dental surgery. Fortunately, my friend has an excellent dental plan which helped her pay for the braces, but what of those who are not so fortunate?

Most kids today will demand ceramic braces, which cost even more than classic metal ones. Average ceramic braces cost about 5 thousand dollars. However, these are much less conspicuous and will greatly help a child retain self esteem. Colorful variants are especially popular, as kids can get each bracket in different color. They can even change color when ever they visit dentist for adjustments.

Even though the braces are very expensive, they can fix some health issues your child would other ways bear for the entire life. Teeth are very important for our self esteem and earlier we fix them, the better. Most of dental plans will cover 50 percent of the cost of braces and the rest can be usually paid in monthly installments to your dentist. All this help bring the cost to a more manageable level.

One of the worst things any kid can hear is that he or she has to wear braces. Social implications of having mouth full of metal are simply terrifying. The endless teasing becomes everyday occurrence in their life and prospects of being accepted in popular companies rapidly diminish. Braces can be a terrible blow to any kid’s self esteem. Fortunately, modern braces technology can now offer a way around these calamities, by offering new types of concealed braces for kids.

Basically, there are three types of concealed braces. The first are ceramic braces. These are practically the same as metal ones, except the brackets are made of ceramic. Ceramic provides better grip on the tooth and ceramic bracket very seldom falls out of position. If they do, it is easily repaired during the next adjustment. But these facts are more important to parents than they are to kids. Kids love them as they come in the same color as their teeth, making them very hard to see. Also, they can be in any color they want them to be, transforming once ugly orthodontic device into a fashion feature. Brackets can be change to ensure child will never wore the same color combination twice.

The second type is so called lingual braces. These are metal braces that are installed behind teeth, making them practically invisible. They are a bit more expensive than regular and are harder to maintain and adjust, but are very popular with kids as they are very hard to spot, at least until later age when they start dating and kissing comes into play.

Finally, we have invisalign braces. Technically speaking, invisalign braces are not braces at all, more of a retainer. They are limited in a sense that they can be used in mild cases, as they simply can’t correct more severe issues. They are made of clear plastic like material and are almost invisible. However, they are not recommended for kids, since their use depends on following the strict set of instruction, most kid will likely forget. On the other hand, it will be hard for anyone to call them metal mouth with these.

Lingual Braces for Kids 2010

Lingual braces are a relatively new thing in orthodontic market. The fact that they are installed behind teeth, opposed to classis braces which are placed on front of teeth, makes them invisible and very popular with kids. Children love them as they allow them to continue their lives without being ridiculed in school or among friends. However, lingual braces have several disadvantages when compared to classic ones. For starters, it is very easy to hurt your tongue on them, as they are in very odd position. Cuts are very common during the first few weeks. This makes them very uncomfortable. In addition, they tend to interfere with your speech and you will have a strong lisp until you are accustomed to them. Lingual braces are also very hard to clean and adjust. It is very hard to spot if you have something stuck between them, and it can be very embracing having something sticking out of your mouth in school. Adjusting lingual braces is also a problem and is one of the reasons for them being so expensive. Another is that they are custom made for each patient. This, on the other hand, ensures that you will get brace that is perfect match for your teeth.

Installing lingual braces is very tricky and should be done by dentists who specialize in this kind of braces. Each bracket is cemented to the tooth and then arch wire is threaded through them. Since the entire procedure is being done inside patient’s mouth, this is very touchy, especially with kids, since they have smaller mouths. In the end, unless condition specifically require metal braces, it maybe a better solution to try some other types of concealed orthodontics device, like invisalign braces. They are not as inconspicuous as lingual braces, but are much easier to install and maintain.
