Lingual braces are a relatively new thing in orthodontic market. The fact that they are installed behind teeth, opposed to classis braces which are placed on front of teeth, makes them invisible and very popular with kids. Children love them as they allow them to continue their lives without being ridiculed in school or among friends. However, lingual braces have several disadvantages when compared to classic ones. For starters, it is very easy to hurt your tongue on them, as they are in very odd position. Cuts are very common during the first few weeks. This makes them very uncomfortable. In addition, they tend to interfere with your speech and you will have a strong lisp until you are accustomed to them. Lingual braces are also very hard to clean and adjust. It is very hard to spot if you have something stuck between them, and it can be very embracing having something sticking out of your mouth in school. Adjusting lingual braces is also a problem and is one of the reasons for them being so expensive. Another is that they are custom made for each patient. This, on the other hand, ensures that you will get brace that is perfect match for your teeth.
Installing lingual braces is very tricky and should be done by dentists who specialize in this kind of braces. Each bracket is cemented to the tooth and then arch wire is threaded through them. Since the entire procedure is being done inside patient’s mouth, this is very touchy, especially with kids, since they have smaller mouths. In the end, unless condition specifically require metal braces, it maybe a better solution to try some other types of concealed orthodontics device, like invisalign braces. They are not as inconspicuous as lingual braces, but are much easier to install and maintain.

Your kid might have misaligned bites, crooked teeth or an overbite or under-bite and they get teeth braces for it. The newer developments of materials and processes have resulted in the availability of various effective braces. There are different kinds of teeth braces for kids. Choose the one with which your kid feels comfortable.
Firstly there are the traditional braces namely the ‘metal braces’. Many people prefer using them even today when there are a number of other braces options available in the market. These braces are durable and effective. They are usually the most economical options of all the braces. Previously these metal braces were termed as the metal mouth but now there have been many improvements in it. Now the metallic brackets come in smaller sizes and in various shapes like stars, hearts etc. Moreover, they come in different colors too including golden and silver. The wires used in them are now quite thinner than before.
Another good option for teeth braces is the ‘speed braces’. It has self ligating brackets which mean that ligatures are not required. Ligatures are the tiny rubber bands or the metal ties used for holding the wires onto the brackets.
These ligatures are, however, liked by some kids because they come in a variety of colors.
Porcelain or ceramic braces are much less noticeable ones as they are tooth-colored. Though the wires are of metal, but the brackets are made of the material which is used for tooth-colored fillings, so they are almost invisible.
Another metallic teeth braces liked by the kids are the ‘lingual braces’. The good thing about them is that they are placed behind your kid’s teeth and not in the front, so no one gets to see them. But care should be taken and only a specialized orthodontist should be consulted for putting these lingual braces on. They are more costly than the regular ones. Kids may have difficulty in speaking at first but once your kid gets used to it, then these braces are usually the preferred ones.
